Shaila Manyam, Senior Vice President in the Public Affairs & Crisis practice at Burson Cohn & Wolfe (BCW) and a 12-year veteran of the U.S. Department of State, has joined the Board of Directors of PartnersGlobal, bringing key strategic communications skills and experience at a critical time for the non-profit sector.
“Today, we are facing increasing polarization and divisive rhetoric around the globe, making it even harder for the non-profit sector to communicate effectively across divides on important issues,” says PartnersGlobal President & CEO Julia Roig. “As we now confront the unexpected challenges that are coming at us with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, Shaila’s deftness and experience connecting with audiences across cultures and in times of crisis is a huge asset to PartnersGlobal and our broader network.”
At BCW, Manyam leads the firm’s international public affairs efforts, advising global organizations, governments, and Fortune 500 companies on strategic communications, national security and trade issues and reputation management. Recently, she has spearheaded efforts including crisis and corporate communications around the COVID-19 pandemic, and trade promotion for key clients, finding the right methods and messages to build strong coalitions and better resonate with audiences.
Prior to joining BCW, Shaila spent 12 years as a Foreign Service Officer in policy and spokesperson roles across the Middle East, Haiti and Washington, D.C., earning five U.S. Department of State awards for her service. Before that, she was Partner and Global Communications Director at Ogilvy.
As the newest member of the PartnersGlobal Board of Directors, Manyam says she looks forward to bringing a unique perspective and skill set to the organization.
“The non-profit sector is doing phenomenal work, but its impact can be limited if we fail to reach the right partners and build stronger, broader relationships and coalitions,” she says. “I look forward to bringing my experience and working with the Board members and organization to help amplify PartnersGlobal’s amazing work.”
Born in Canada and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, Manyam holds a bachelor’s degree from Smith College, where she earned a double-major in Economics and Government with honors. She received a master’s degree from the London School of Economics. She speaks six languages, including French, Arabic and Spanish, and is also a member of the Meridian International Center’s Global Leadership Council.
PartnersGlobal is working to transform the way we collectively approach building a more peaceful and democratic world. Our efforts across the globe bring diverse actors together—government officials, civil society leaders, activists, bilateral donors, security forces, international organizations, and businesses, among others—to build trusting relationships and collaborate on common goals.
Whether we’re working to address corruption or resolve violent conflict, as an integrator, we build bridges among these groups for a common purpose. This approach increases our collective impact and helps to ensure the conditions and relationships are in place to support real change in the long term.
