Addressing Digital Security in the Middle East and North Africa
How often do we, myself included, take for granted the incredible privilege of freely expressing ourselves on the Internet and social media? I find myself reflecting on this after scrolling through my social media feed, where friends are passionately sharing links and images about issues close to their hearts. Yet, I am acutely aware that this freedom is a luxury not afforded to many around the world.
We are increasingly living in a world where being an activist in the digital space comes with increasing risks. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) specifically, activists and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) operate in one of the most digitally insecure environments. These brave individuals often face heightened risks including surveillance, hacking, and censorship– creating an environment where certain groups receive disproportionate protection from online defamation.
I know very well how, in conflict zones, the stakes are exceptionally high. Digital platforms are often one of the few safe spaces where activists can mobilize, share a cry for help, and connect with the international community. But these safe spaces are increasingly under attack, targeted by governments and groups that want to silence opposition voices. This makes robust digital security measures essential to protecting activists and their invaluable work.
The struggle to secure the digital space safe is full of challenges. Access to necessary tools and knowledge is a significant barrier. Even basic practices like encrypted communication, digital hygiene and management of IP addresses are challenging due to unreliable internet services. Furthermore, the threat of legal repercussions for digital activities can deter activists from fully utilizing online platforms for their advocacy work.
PartnersGlobal is dedicated to supporting those who work in digitally repressed contexts and will continue to collaborate with partners to develop trainings and best practices that equip them with the tools needed to defend against digital threats. Recognizing the financial constraints that hinder robust security measures, we provide small grants to help organizations invest in necessary technologies and expertise, making legal and digital advice more accessible to activists.
Our efforts to enhance digital security are vital steps towards ensuring that the voices of activists can continue to inspire hope, foster social cohesion, and drive transformative change. Protecting digital spaces for activists in MENA is not just a matter of security; it is essential for the survival of democratic values and human rights in the region. Every step we take together in this endeavor is a step towards ensuring that voices like ours can continue to resonate and be heard.
