Celebrating Women in the Security Sector: Kemi A. Ajet, Chief Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps

  September 30, 2020

In her role as Chief Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Kemi A. Ajet has over 15 years of active service under her belt. Chief Ajet first became involved in the security sector out of a desire to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity during and after crisis. A significant moment of her career was when she was first recruited into the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps. Chief Ajet sees herself playing a powerful and pivotal role to contribute to gender mainstreaming in all levels of the Corps.

As head of the Gender Unit, she is responsible for — among many duties – ensuring gender equity principles are incorporated into all policies and activities, monitoring and reporting on gender issues, mainstreaming gender in programs and implementation of trainings on gender, and knowledge management and knowledge sharing.

She has led two major initiatives to promote women in the security sector namely: (1) Training on Gender and Women Rights for Officers of the Corps in cooperation with the Emergency Risk Alert Initiative; and (2) Gender Mainstreaming in Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps in partnership with Partners West Africa Nigeria and UN Women.

In all she does, Chief Ajet works to support the role of women in the security sector. She provided psychosocial support for internally displaced persons in Nassarawa State from 2014 to 2016; supported the development of the Women Action Plan for Kogi State on Resolution 1325 with ActionAid in 2018; and now serves as the Gender Focal Person of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps Headquarters in Abuja.
