Roma
Integration Program
In May 2003, Partners for Democratic Change (Partners),
with Partners-Czech, Partners-Hungary, Partners-Slovakia,
and USAID, launched a
four-year Roma Integration Program (RIP) in the Czech Republic,
Hungary, and Slovakia, valued at $2.8 million. The program
operates at the community, national, and regional
levels to increase political and economic opportunities
for Roma, the largest minority group in Europe. Three themes
form the core of the Roma Integration Program’s approach,
offering a model of Roma integration that can be replicated
across national boundaries:
1. Inter-Ethnic
Collaboration and Tolerance Promotion – Roma and majority
groups collaborate in political, social, and media settings
to improve inter-ethnic relations and affect change.
2. Community
Development – Roma improve their standards of living
through improved access to social services, the cultivation
of marketable job skills and education initiatives.
3. Informed
Decision-Making and Accountability – Government leaders
and civil society organizations collaboratively generate
recommendations and create new public policies to promote
Roma integration.
