The Innovare Award was created in Brazil in 2004 to recognize, award and foster knowledge about innovative practices in Rule of Law among Brazil's judiciary, prosecutors, public defendants and lawyers. The 2009 edition was focused on a “Fast and Effective Justice System”.
The jury was composed of recognized professionals from the business, academic and legal fields nationwide. They selected practices that benefit the population, and enhance public security and peace building.
Gabriela Asmar, the Director of the Partners' Center in Brazil, won by unanimity the 2009 Innovare Award for her work at the Rio de Janeiro Chapter of the Brazilian Bar Association to help lawyers broaden their view of conflict resolution, in order to include ADR processes and be able to choose whatever method is more adequate for clients on a case by case basis. A wide research project was conducted by Gabriela Asmar and her team. It proved that tendency to utilize the judiciary as the sole method for conflict resolution is inversely proportional to the level of actual experience in mediation processes.
The award was granted by the youngest Supreme Court Minister in a ceremony at the Supreme Court of Brazil on December 17, 2009. It was attended by the Brazilian Vice President.
