PDCI launches peace, security and development seminar

Partners for Democratic Change International, in Brussels, is working with the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (EPLO) to highlight these crucial issues in a European seminar this April.

The nexus between peace, security and development has been recently placed at the center of the international policy agenda, including that of the European Union (EU). One of the driving forces behind this effort has been the need to have more effective interventions in conflict-affected countries, which better integrate peacebuilding with the more traditional development programs of the EU.On the part of civil society, NGOs have followed these debates closely, regularly participating in relevant consultations and events. EPLO has taken a particular interest in the topic, given the extensive work that its members have done in ensuring that all EU external policies are conflict sensitive. Conflict prevention and peacebuilding, the core interests of EPLO members, are indeed central to the nexus between security, peace and development.

The seminar is two sessions:  first, a panel discussion on a recent IfP report, then a roundtable discussion about peacebuilding and development. Along with PDCI participants, the event is expected to attract European Union officials and prominent scholars from the region. PDCI will assert the fundamental need for peace in order to create sustainable development. This joint EPLO and PDCI seminar is scheduled for April 7, 2009. For more information, see PDCI's home page or visit the EPLO website.
