Partners-Argentina launches environmental conflict transformation project in the Argentinian Andes
Partners-Argentina is strengthening the work of non-state actors to uphold water rights and social control of mining activities in the region of CUYO and NOA.
Fundación Cambio Democrático (Partners-Argentina) and The Environment and Natural Resources Foundation (FARN) were awarded an 18-month grant by the European Union to start a project in March 2009. The objectives of the project are to strengthen the non-state actor’s capacity in social control and cooperative advocacy for sustainable development in the regions of CUYO and NOA; as well as to promote and build an environmental community, through democratic dialogues, that adopts conflict resolution in impending socio-environmental issues. Both organizations seized the challenge of designing and implementing this project in response to the urgent need to improve the management of the Andean ecosystem, believing it is only through effective and responsible participation of civil society that environmental conservation and sustainable development are achievable.
Their work entails strengthening the non-state actor’s capacity to formulate and implement public policy related to environmental and water rights, and the impact of mining activities. In due course, the center will encourage, assist, and monitor the elaboration and execution of projects that mitigate the impact of mining activities and uphold water rights. An ultimate goal is to build awareness about the importance of collaboratively approaching environmental conflicts and promoting water rights at the national and regional level.
In June 22nd, the project was launched in Cuyo. The objective of this first meeting was to gather information about the local conflicts. For more information in Spanish about this project, please visit: http://www.farn.org.ar/mineriayagua/
