Catalysts for Democratic Change in the Americas
A regional program to strengthen the Inter-American Democratic Charter through increased awareness and engagement of civil society.
With support from the U.S. State Department, the Open Society Institute, the OAS Division of Education and Culture, and George Mason University’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Partners has convened a network of civil society leaders from over 10 countries to jointly implement Catalysts for Democratic Change in the Americas.
Many civil society networks in Latin America focus on democracy and human rights in general, but these advocacy efforts are rarely focused on the OAS inter-American system or the Inter-American Democratic Charter specifically. CDCA is working within those networks to highlight the importance of the Charter and to galvanize civil society to take a more active role in converting the Charter into a relevant advocacy tool for democracy in the region.
The program works directly with civil society leaders from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela to jointly develop and implement a training program on the Charter for civil society organizations throughout the region. Catalysts for Democratic Change in the Americas also focuses on bridging the theory and practice of Collaborative Advocacy strategies and coalition-building. Partners will work through existing networks and the local Partners Centers to convene dialogue processes across sectors in pilot countries to implement a collaborative advocacy strategy to promote compliance with the Charter.
