Indigenous Leaders Meet to Discuss Partners Colombia's New Justice Program
Partners Colombia co-hosted an event in the city of Riohacha, bringing together over a hundred indigenous leaders, community representatives and local officials to discuss the project "Strengthening the Rights of the Wayuu".
On September 20, about a hundred indigenous Wayúu leaders, representatives of indigenous organizations, community leaders, local and regional officials of the La Guajira department participated in the launch even of the project "Strengthening the Rights of the Wayúu” in Riohacha. The event was organized by Partners Colombia in association with the Ministry of Interior and Justice, the National Indigenous Organization (ONIC) and the local indigenous organization Akuaipa Waimakat, and co-hosted by Oscar Gaitan, director of Partners Colombia.
At the meeting, the panelists officially presented the goals and strategies of the two-year project to the Wayúu community and local officials. The program seeks to promote the creation of an Indigenous Rights School and a Victims Assistance clinic through dialogue and consultation between indigenous and government actors. During the ceremony, a tribute was paid following Wayúu customs to two indigenous leaders murdered, Idalmis Donoso and Jairo Pushaina, whose social actions were committed to the protection and preservation of the Wayúu culture and the promotion of an Indigenous Rights School.
Both indigenous leaders and local representatives from the government of La Guajira expressed their support for the project and their intention to work together towards improving access to justice for Colombia’s Wayúu population. For more information, please click here (in Spanish).
