Opened in 2005, Partners Jordan offers a range of services designed to promote a culture of peaceful change and conflict management to government institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector in Jordan. The Center is an independent and locally-staffed not-for-profit organization. It specializes in working to strengthen good governance and develop the Jordanian civil society sector by encouraging increased citizen involvement in Jordan’s social and political development through the spread of mediation and conflict and change management skills and services.
In all of its work Partners Jordan endeavors to strengthen ongoing political reform efforts by facilitating dialogue and cooperation between the government and civil society sectors. The Center is also committed to increasing political participation by women, youth, and marginalized groups.
Highlights from the Jordanian Center include:
Developing its capacity to act as a Regional Management Office that will oversee the training of new regional Partners Centers, develop a network of trainers, facilitate regional trainings and workshops, and help structure marketing and fundraising strategies for future Partners’ Centers in the Middle East. To this end Partners Jordan has begun serving as a hub for Partners’ growing work in the Middle East, cooperating with Partners on work in Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria.
Promoting in-country training and trainer expertise to increase citizen participation, build consensus, and manage disputes that are inherent in a democratic system. Trainings are offered to civil society organizations, government representatives, and the private sector in effective communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and cooperative planning methodologies.
Providing change and conflict management services to help community, government, and business leaders resolve contentious local issues. The Center offers services in mediation, dialogue facilitation, consensus building, and cooperative planning. Partners-Jordan also conducts extensive outreach across sectors to educate diverse groups about the utility of such programs.
Encouraging new public policies using citizen participation processes to build bottom-up support for civil society and government reform initiatives. Jordan’s Ministry of Political Development recently asked Jordanian NGOs to recommend changes to the existing NGO law. In response, Partners-Jordan is facilitating national-level collaborative discussions between civil society organizations and between government and civil society to push forward this reform process.
Promoting democratic development and more effective and sustainable institutions through programs utilizing change and dispute management skills that lead to results such as improved governance, strengthened civic leadership, and more effective and sustainable institutions. These program focus on:
- Good Governance: Training local government and civil society organizations to work together effectively, resulting in increased cross-sectoral cooperation.
- Youth Leadership: Promoting cooperation between youth and government officials and engaging youth in decision making processes.
- Civil Society Development and Coalition Building: Increasing the capacity of civil society organizations to build coalitions at the national level through training in cooperative planning and advocacy, basic conflict resolution, and communication.
