TV
Newsmagazine Highlights Roma Life in Slovakia
The
Roma Integration Program has partnered with the Roma Press
Agency (RPA) to transform the TV newsmagazine Romale
into So Vakeres? (What are you saying?), a bi-weekly
program focusing on Roma current events and culture.
So Vakeres? is a valuable opportunity for Romani
journalists to broadcast accurate information about Roma
issues to a wide audience. The show is being aired on Slovak
TV in both Slovak and Romani dialects, making the show accessible
to both communities. It will increase inter-ethnic communication
and reduce discriminatory attitudes.
“It’s a unique chance to present the problems of the Roma
through their own eyes,” RPA Director Ivan Hriczko said.
“The Roma are depicted by the majority media as a curiosity,
as people who create problems, people without names and
without the capability for changing their lives. It is a
demeaning situation which harms the community.”
A team of Romani journalists will produce and edit the
show. Partners-Slovakia joined the Roma Press Agency in
holding intensive training seminars for the journalists
to increase their professional skills and prepare them for
careers in the fast-paced broadcast journalism field.
Each episode will broadcast news segments, feature reports
on Decade of Roma Inclusion issues (health, housing, education,
and employment), interviews with Roma leaders, and cultural
reports from Roma communities.
