Sharing
Best Practices Across International Lines
Sharing best practices in Roma integration is a critical
piece of the Roma Integration Program. Program initiatives
bring Czech, Slovak and Hungarian stakeholders together
to share ideas and experiences, cultivate new regional partnerships,
and ultimately to design innovative solutions to ongoing
issues in their respective communities and countries.
Regional Beneficiaries Meetings: Once
a year, Roma beneficiaries from each of the target communities
come together for Regional Beneficiary Meetings to discuss
program achievements and challenges, and to develop strategies
for new Roma integration initiatives. Three meetings have
been held thus far – the first in Brno, Czech Republic (2004),
the second in Poprad, Slovakia (2005), and the third in
Pécs, Hungary (2006).
International Conciliation Commission Meeting:
In May 2006, twenty-five Roma and non-Roma Conciliation
Commission members from the Czech Republic, Hungary
and Slovakia assembled
to exchange best practices for sustaining these community-based
conflict resolution structures.
Grantees Share Best Practices: The Roma
Integration Program provides many opportunities for grantees
to share best practices in Roma integration projects:
- Community members from Prešov and Rimavská Sobota, Slovakia
visited housing projects in the Czech Republic to assess
and learn from new approaches to housing issues in Roma
settlements. Experiences were shared in how to most effectively
assist Roma families who are facing possible eviction
or cuts to utility services because of unpaid bills.
- Individuals involved in educational initiatives from
Pardubice, Czech Republic visited Bruntál to share information
about kindergarten programs and the work of teaching assistants.
- Two communities in Slovakia shared ideas about the development
of an economic empowerment program to train disadvantaged
Roma communities and provide them with the necessary materials
to breed rabbits. This led to the successful design and
implementation of a small grant project.
